Once you have decided to remodel your kitchen you need to start doing some kitchen planning. Planning in stages is the best approach since a kitchen is a big project, and an important space in your home, and you need information that you will gather. This will be further explained.  Depending on your skill level you may want to hire a professional to do the work

Kitchen planning begins by assessing your needs

You should begin kitchen planning by discussing changes and improvements with your spouse. Take a good long look at your kitchen, noting what changes are the most important. How is your kitchen most used? Do you do a lot of cooking, and need more prep space, or are you a little light on the cooking but use this space to socialize?Form a list of projected improvements, adding as you think of others.

Now you have reached the phase where making a basic drawing is in order. Create a sketch that outlines both shape and size of kitchen. Graph paper works well for this, and it is good to make extras copies in it’s primary blank stage. Once you have copies, take one and draw cabinets and kitchen appliiances where you think they are well placed. You’ll need accurate measurements, and each measurement should be noted on your rough plan.

Now that you have a rough drawing and measurements, it is time to take it with you and do some comparison shopping. Now you have your list and it is time to research suppliers to see what is available. Appliances and materials have undergone major improvements and you will want to have the latest information. as you’ll want your just remodeled kitchen to boast the latest improvements. Leave your credit cards at home and make this a research venture only, and note prices and measurements as you shop.

Home improvement is a large industry with a lot of competition.You will appreciate this advantage as you price check, noting variances between your product sources. After price shopping, and researching materials and appliances, you will be ready to work on a definitive plan.

Determining a budget factors into kitchen planning

The kitchen planning process will probably take you some time. Now that you have gathered more and updated information you can begin making some decisions about how to proceed. Budgeting for your kitchen remodel will likely take some time in order to provide enough without going beyond your means.

This may be the time to consider trade-offs or determining what in your current kitchen can be reclaimed and used in your new kitchen.
 
For instance:

 1. Would refacing your cabinets be a satisfactory and cost-effective decision?

 2. Could you give on the solid granite countertop, in favor of a less expensive material?

 3. If necessary which are you most willing to give up, the travertine floor or the granite countertop?

These are only suggested topics, yours will differ, but the methodology would be the same.

Kitchen Planning will be beneficial to you whether you are going to do all or some of the kitchen remodeling yourself, or whether you hire it all done. Having a reasonably good plan will be helpful if you contract the work out. By supplying this to a contractor you will gain an advantage in getting the final result you expect.
